Biography

I did my undergraduate dental degree at the National Taiwan University and then received specialist training in periodontology at NTU Hospital and Taipei Chang Gung Hospital. I worked in a regional hospital for a few years before working as a periodontal specialist in private clinics. In 2000, I went to London and did my master’s degree in periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London. My career started to change path.

My supervisor, Professor Mark Gilthorpe, encouraged me to do a PhD in epidemiology and biostatistics. After I came back to Taiwan in September 2001, he moved to Leeds and managed to secure funding for my studies. In May 2003, I went to Leeds to take up a position as a Clinical Research Fellow and also worked on my PhD. I obtained my PhD in March 2006 and was immediately awarded a tenured 5-year UK Research Council fellowship. I got promoted to Senior Clinical Research Fellow and eventually Principal Research Fellow at Leeds. My book, Statistical Thinking in Epidemiology, written with Mark, was published by Chapman & Hall in 2011, and I also edited a book, Modern Methods for Epidemiology, with my colleague Dr Darren Greenwood. It was published by Springer in 2012.

I took up a position As an Associate Professor at NTU in August 2012 after spending more than nine years in Leeds and was promoted to full professor in August 2016. I was appointed as the Director of the Institute of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine in August 2017 and completed two terms in July 2023. I am now a Vice Dean of the College of Public Health.

I was awarded the Distinguished Professor in August 2022 by the National Taiwan University and the Outstanding Research Award by the National Science & Technology Council in Taiwan in February 2024.
